If you are looking to put together some great home gym equipment, then you need good dumbbells sets. Many people often overlook dumbbells as they build out their gym, and this decision can be a very costly one in terms of missed opportunies--there is a tremendous amount of exercises that can be performed with the best dumbbell sets that can't be done otherwise. As such, you realy should consider purchasing a good set for your gym. In fact, due to recent innovations in the fitness world, you now don't have the traditional excuse that people use to not include such free weights in their home gym.

The typical reasons why people do not include dumbbells in their gym plan include:

  1. The Dumbbells Cost. Traditionally a good set cost upwards to $1,000 for a weight set that included 5 lb to 50 lbs weights, in increments of 5 lbs (i.e. the traditional set).
  2. The space required. Fitting 20 individual dumbbells and a rack to hold them can take up an entire wall, which many home gyms just don't have the room for.

However, with the increase in quality and choices with adjustable dumbbell sets, you no longer have to worry about either of these problems. In other words, if you are looking at building a home gym, go buy a good set of adjustable dumbbells - you will not be disappointed. Advantages of such weights include the following:

  1. Space saving. Adjustable dumbbells are amazing in that they basically just take up the space that 2 individual, traditional hex dumbbells would take up. No longer do you need a whole wall dedicated to them, you just need a small corner.
  2. Cost. You save a lot of money with them. Basically, with free weights you will spend over $1 per pound of weight. With an adjustable set, on the other hand, you end up spending around 1/2 of that, depending on the set.
  3. Long-Lasting and dependable. If you buy the right set, they will last a very, very long time

Best Adjustable Dumbbell Brands

I would recommend one of three brands when it comes to adjustable dumbbells - the one's made by Powerblock, Weider, or Lifecore. Each of these three sets offers tremendous value, and each one will appeal to different people.

The Powerblock set is probably the number one dumbbell set on the market today, and for good reason. You can get up to 125 lbs of weight, and there is one huge advantage with the powerblock sets - you can add on to them later. So, you can start with their basic set, the Powerblock U-90 dumbbell set, which goes up to 50lbs of weight in increments of 2.5 lbs; then, if you want to later you can add on to that set and end up with more weight. In addition, there are no moving parts, making them the most durable set on the market. The only downside is that they are expensive.

With the Weider or the Lifecore sets, you are getting very good, quality constructed dumbbells at a very reasonable cost. Both of these sets will usually be less than the Powerblocks, with the Weider Powerswitch being the cheapest, at $300 which includes a weight stand - one heck of a deal for what you get. Both sets go up to 50 lbs of weight, and allow to switch back and forth very easily with no problems. The only disadvantage is that these sets do have moving parts, so they may not last as long as the Powerblocks will.
